DEATH OF REV. J. F. DAVIS

Former Lorimor Pastor Dies At Jefferson. Burial Made Here

The Rev. James F. Davis, former Methodist minister at Lorimor, was brought to Winterset last week for burial in the family plot in the local cemetery. The Rev. Mr. Davis died at his home in Jefferson on December 8.

The minister was well-known in Winterset and Lorimor. His pastorate at Lorimor covered the period of the World war. One of his sons, Fred Davis, was a member of Company A of Winterset and was killed in action in France.

The Rev. Mr. Davis was a native of Bay City, Michigan. After serving in the missionary fields of Canada as a young man he accepted charges in the Dakotas before settling in Iowa. In this state he filled pulpits in 12 cities before ill health forced him into retirement.

Rev. J. F. Davis Dies

Rev. James F. Davis, father of Sheriff Foss Davis, passed to his Heavenly home last Saturday night, at the age of 71 years. He had been a minister of the M. E. church for more than 35 years, most of which he served Iowa churches. He was pastor at Churchdan for five years, and held his last official charge at Altoona. His health giving away he moved to the province of Ontario, Canada, ten years ago, settling at Thamesford, not far from London, Canada. Three years ago he returned to Greene County and has resided in Jefferson since that time.

The funeral occurred at the M. E. church at the hour of 1:15 o’clock this afternoon, with the service by Dr. W. J. Fowler, the pastor. The funeral party then left overland for Winterset, where he will be interred in the family lot.

James Frederick Davis, son of Mr. and Mrs. James F. Davis, was born at Bay City, Michigan, March 25, 1864. At the age of five years he moved with his parents to Tweed, Ontario, Canada. While the family resided there his mother died when he was eight years old.

When nineteen years old he went to the missionary fields in Alberta, Canada, and in his early twenties he moved to the Dakotas and was admitted to full membership in the Dakota conference, filling several charges there.

He was married in 1889 to Mona M. Stebbins at Blunt, South Dakota. There was born to this union seven children: Mrs. W. E. Mitchell of Jefferson, Josephine of Los Angeles, California, Foss Davis of Jefferson, Frederick N. Davis who was killed in action during the World War, Franklin and William L. Davis of Jefferson, and Marjorie Davis who preceded him in death.

In 1894 Mr. Davis was admitted to the Des Moines conference, filling charges at North Branch, Menlo, Carson, Anita, Macedonia, Griswold, Oscrola, Guthrie Center, De Soto, Lorimor, Churchdan and Altoona. He served in the conference until 1924 at which time he retired because of ill health and moved to Thamesford, Ontario, Canada. In April of 1932 he moved to Jefferson, Iowa, where he resided until his death December 8 at the age of 70 years 8 months and 13 days.

He leaves to mourn his death his wife, five grandchildren, four sisters, Mrs. M. Cowper of Thamesford, Ontario, Mrs. Geo. Peake of Toledo, Ohio, Mrs. J. B. Carman of Greenpoint, Ontario Mrs. S. E. Wilson of Trenton, Ontario, and one brother, W. D. Davis of Thamesford, Ontario, besides other relatives and many friends.
