Page 5DEATH OF A. J. SMITH
A. J. (Jack) Smith, well known Madison county farmer and former Winterset druggist, died at the Winterset hospital Friday of pneumonia complications. He was 73 years old.
Mr. Smith had been in poor health for some time but he was only seriously ill for a few days.
Mr. Smith was born March 23, 1860 near Marshalltown, a member of a pioneer family. With his cousin, the late M. E. Smith, he came to Winterset about 40 years ago. Here he engaged in the drug business for some time, later moving to a farm in Jackson township where he lived two years. He then moved to a farm about one mile east of Winterset before buying the place three miles north of the city where he had since lived.
Mr. Smith was married on January 30th, 1895 to Miss Sylvia Armstrong. They were the parents of five children, two of whom, Hoyt and Hobart died in infancy.
The deceased is survived by his wife, one son, Hugh Smith of Sigourney, two daughters, Mrs. Bradley Patterson and Miss Lenore Smith of this county and a brother W. S. Smith of Ferguson, Iowa.
Funeral services were at 2 p. m. Sunday at the Church of Christ under the direction of the Rev. H. L. Olmstead. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
