PIONEER TRURO RESIDENT DIES

I. E. Holmes, Aged 91, Was Pioneer Postmaster in County

I. E. Holmes, a life-long resident of this community, died at his home here Saturday, April 19, after an extended period of failing health. He was 91 years of age.

Mr. Holmes career at Truro had included those of farmer and hog buyer, and he was a former postmaster. For many years he had engaged in the insurance business also.

In recent years he had made his home here with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. C. N. Reed.

He was Truro postmaster for about 15 years and was credited with starting the first rural farm delivery route in that area. He retired from the insurance business about 10 years ago.

Surviving are his daughter, four grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon from the Truro Methodist church, with burial being made in the Truro cemetery. (Hartman cemetery)

LIFE OF I. E. HOLMES SPANNED 91 YEARS

The life of I. E. Holmes, prominent Truro resident, whose death occurred there April 19, at the age of 91 years, spanned the years during which Madison county was transformed from raw frontier to a modern community.

Mr. Holmes was born to pioneer parents, Archibald and Elizabeth Holmes, in a prairie log cabin home one and one-half miles northeast of Truro, on the place now known as the Rundall farm. His birthday was Aug. 13, 1860. He lived all his life in or near Truro except for two years in Arizona and California.

He was one of a family of nine children and his mother died when he was nine years of age.

On Feb. 1, 1888 he was married to Emma C. Cobbs of Truro. They were parents of a son and daughter. The son, Ernest, died in 1920. Mrs. Holmes died in 1932.

He is survived by his daughter, Mrs. C. N. Reed of Truro with whom he had made his home in recent years. He also leaves four grandchildren, six great grandchildren; a brother, H. H. Holmes of Sacramento, Calif.; and a sister, Mrs. Mary E. Lyons of Glendale, Calif.
