Betty M. Lee

Funeral services for Betty M. Lee were held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 21, at the United Methodist church in Dexter, Mrs. Lee died of cancer Tuesday, Jan. 18, at the Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset at age 79.

Officiating at the service were Rev. Kathy Sides and Rev. Robert Farr, and Robert Lawson was organist. Soloist Kathy Sides sang “Hymn of Promise” and “Because He Lives.” The congregational hymn was “How Great thou Art.”

Pallbearers were Jeff Horn, Glenn Patience, Ken Hykes, Mike Chafa, Ken Gebbie, Henry Oltman and Joe Grote. Honorary pallbearers were Marion Marks and Gaylord Thomson. Burial was at the Dexter Cemetery, and Kuhn Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Betty Marie Lee was born the daughter of Peter and Era Maude Ohrt on the family farm near Dexter on Aug. 9, 1920. After graduating from Dexter High School in 1937, Betty attended classes at the University of Omaha working toward a teaching degree.

Betty and Charles Lee were married June 12, 1947 in Nett Adkins’ home in Dexter, as there was a flood the night before the wedding and the church was surrounded by water. The wedding reception was held at Martha Blohm’s home.

Betty and Charles loved to travel and traveled extensively through out all the states except Oregon, Washington and Alaska, however they went to Hawaii twice. Betty and Charles wintered in Arizona near Mesa and Apache Junction, which Betty continued to do after Charles died in 1991.

Betty was an active member of the Dexter Methodist Church, holding many offices in the church and women’s circles. She was a member of the Dexter P.E.O., Earlham Eastern Star, Neola American Legion Auxiliary, as well as a member of the Dexter D.T. club. Betty was also a member of the 2nd Marine Reunion of which Charles was a member. She served on the board of the Dexter Apartments for many years.

Although Betty and Charles never had any children of their own, they loved and cared for many children of family and friends around Dexter.

Betty leaves the following to celebrate her life; sister-in-law Vera Blomquist of Stuart, two nephews, one niece, and many friends.
