OBITUARY

Martha Marie, nee, Jensen, wife of Detlef Ohrt was born March 17, 1844 in the Province of Schleswig Island of Pelhworm, Germany. On Mar 11, 1866, she was united in marriage with her surviving husband.

On June 19, 1871 Mr. and Mrs. Ohrt came to this country, landing in New York City on that date. She has been a resident of the vicinity a great many years and of Dexter about two years.

Her husband and four children survive her, these latter being Ann Margaretta, wife of George A. Blohm, Christine Fredericke, Peter Martin and John Conrad; all of whom live in the vicinity. A daughter, Johanna Justine, preceded her mother in death. She is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Maria Richter of Panora, Iowa, and also by twelve grand-children.

Her death was sudden and unexpected. She fell asleep on Tuesday January 16, at about 1 o’clock in the afternoon at her home, aged 67 years 9 months and 29 days.

She was a good and faithful wife, a kind and loving mother, and a good neighbor, and a member of the German Lutheran church.

The services were Thursday, January 18 at 2 o’clock p.m. from here, conducted by her pastor, Rev. H. Schmidt, who spoke from Psalms 4:8. Interment was made in the Dexter cemetery.

Those from away who attended the funeral services were:
C. M. Jensen of Dennison, Iowa, Mrs. J. E. O’Malley of Perry, Iowa, Mrs. Frank Compton of Earlham, Fred Petersen of Earlham.

Note: Martha Jensen Ohrt was a former resident of Penn Twp, Madison Co, Iowa in 1880, 1885, and 1910 according to the census. Obituary furnished by Allen Ohrt.

SUDDEN DEATH
Mrs. Ohrt dies suddenly at Her Home Tuesday

The many friends were shocked and grieved to learn of the sudden and unexpected death of Mrs. D. Ohrt on Tuesday afternoon at about 3 o’clock. Although it was a well know fact that she had not been in robust health for some time being a sufferer from dropsy, yet she seemed apparently healthy otherwise and had been attending to her household duties as usual up to the time of her death. On Tuesday she helped prepare the noon meal as usual and partook of a hearty dinner, after which she sat down in her easy chair t read as she was want to do upon many other occasions. But after a short time she remarked to her husband that she did not fee very well and that she would lie down for a little while on a lounge in the room. She soon went to sleep and even the husband did not know that she was then dying; the only alarm he had was when she gave a few sharp coughs as though choking, and rushed to hr side, but the spirit of her whom he had loved had gone to its maker.

The exact cause of her death we are unable to learn but was directly due to her only affliction, that of dropsy.

The funeral of this faithful Christian mother is being held this afternoon at 2 o’clock from the Lutheran Church, conducted by her pastor, Rev. Herman Schmidt, and interment will be made in the Dexter cemetery. A complete biography of the life of this noble mother will appear next week.
