RAY PARKER DIES FOLLOWING WRECK

Fatal Mishap Occurred Last Saturday Morning South of Town

Raymond J. Parker, one of this community's most popular and highly regarded young men, was fatally injured last Saturday, June 13, in a motor vehicle collison in Lincoln township. He was 18 years of age.

The fatal accident occurred when the motorcycle Parker was driving collided with a car driven by Vern Honnold of Monroe township at a rural road intersection about eight miles southwest of Winterset in Lincoln township.

This intersection is about one-fourth mile south of the Yale school. Parker was proceeding west on the dirt road which intersects the county road there, and Honnold was driving north on the rock road. Parker drove into the rock road and made a left turn to the south. The two vehicles collided head-on with terrific impact. Parker and his machine were carried or thrown 60-feet north from the point of impact. Honnold's car went out of control and plunged into the deep grader ditch along the west side of the road.

Because of the blind condition of the intersection for any vehicle coming from the east and turning south, this accident could be termed unavoidable under ordinary circumstances of driving.

Parker was taken to Madison county Memorial hospital in Winterset, where his death occurred of multiple injuries about two hours after the accident.

Honnold was not injured. Two small boys, Doyle and Raymond Haglund were riding with him. Doyle was treated at a doctor's office in Winterset for severe cuts and bruises before being released.

Parker's motorcycle was demolished and Honnold's car was heavily damaged in the crash.

Raymond Parker was the only son of Carl R. and Berniece K. Parker of Monroe township. He was born July 13, 1934, at Osceola. For the last nine years, the family had lived in Madison county.

He attended the Winterset high school, graduating with the class of 1952. During his high school career here he was an outstanding athlete, in football, basketball and track. In football, for three straight years he played tackle on the teams which made Winterset one of the powers of football in southwest Iowa, and he won all-conference honors in that sport.

During the past year he had been attending Drake university in Des Moines, and this spring was named as one of the most promising members of the Freshman grid squad at that school.

In addition to his parents, Raymond is survived by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Parker and Mr. and Mrs. Loren Stalcup, all of Lorimor.

Funeral services were held Monday from the Ord Christian Union church, conducted by the Rev. Glenn R. Parrott, pastor of the Winterset Methodist church. Pall bearers were Charles McGaffin, Richard Waters, Robert Clark, Richard Nelson, Chester Schoenenberger and Irwin Huff.

Burial was made in the Clark cemetery in Monroe township.
