December 1953HATTIE HODSON
Hattie Hodson was born in Clinton county, Ohio, on January 18, 1868, the youngest daughter of Carey and Susan Hodson.
She departed this life on the morning of December 4, 1953, at the Garwood Nursing home in Dexter after a short illness. (Buried in the Earlham cemetery)
She would have been 86 years of age in January.
When but a small child she came with her parents to a farm near Earlham where she grew to young womanhood. At the death of her father, she, with her older sisters, Belle and Cora, set up a home in Dexter, where they lived for about eight years, afterwards moving to Earlham, where they built their home.
She spent the rest of her life in this community.
Her life's work was teaching and for many years she taught in both rural schools and the Earlham public school. Even in her later years she was much pleased by visits and remembrances from former pupils of hers.
After retiring from teaching, her life was devoted to caring for relatives and friends.
Hattie maintained her own home until August 1952, when the infirmaties of age rendered her unable to care for herself. Her needs were kindly ministered in a nursing home. She had been confined to her bed for about the past month.
She was a faithful member of the Methodist church here for many years and was devoted to its work. At one time she was a member of the Sorosis Club and the Rebekah Lodge.
Preceding her in death were her parents, a brother, George and three sisters, Isabelle Foster, Catharine Bilderback and Cora Hodson and three half-sisters.
Surviving relatives include: a niece, Lulu B. Fry and husband. There are five great nieces and nephews: Marie Standing, Robert B. Fry of Oxnard, California, Kathryn Stumpenhorst of Des Moines, Charles W. Fry and Mary Boyle. There are eight great great nieces and nephews.
