LESTER KALE OF WINTERSET DIES

Local Citizen Was Active in Numerous Fields of Endeavor

The Rev. Lester Kale, whose long career as farmer, auctioneer, business man and minister made him one of Madison county's most widely-known residents, died Sunday, July 31, at the Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset. He was 78 years of age and had been in failing health the past year.

He was born on a farm near Peru on Nov. 20, 1876, a son of James and Revah (King) Kale. His early life was spent in farming. Later he moved to Winterset where he worked as an auctioneer for many years. He also engaged in the garage business here and recently in real estate. In 1928 he was elected mayor of Winterset, serving one complete term.

He became a member of the Elm Grove Methodist church at an early age. In 1907 he joined the Winterset Methodist church where he served as Sunday school superintendent from 1915 to 1919. In 1937 he went to California where he spent 10 years in evangelistic and ministerial work. While there he was ordained a pastor of the Foursquare Gospel church. In 1947 he returned to Winterset and had been serving as pastor of the Elm Grove Methodist church here.

He was married Dec. 21, 1907 to Kathryn Zellar of Winterset. They were parents of three children, an infant son who died in 1924, a son, Eugene, now of Los Angeles, Calif., and a daughter, Delores, whose death occurred in 1929, while she was a junior student in the Winterset high school. They also reared in their home an orphan girl, now, Mrs. Jay Dieter of Cincinnati, O.

In addition to his wife, and son, he is survived by a brother, John Kale of Paradise, Calif., and a sister, Mrs. Ora Husted of Winterset.

Funeral services were to be held this Wednesday afternoon from the Winterset Methodist church, conducted by the pastor, the Rev. W. W. Steinmetz. Burial was to be made in the Winterset cemetery.
