FIFTH FATALITY OF 1955 HERE

Car and Truck Collide on No. 169 North of Winterset

Carl V. Christensen, 33, of Winterset was fatally injured this Wednesday morning when the car he was driving collided with a truck on highway No. 169, about six miles north of Winterset.

It was the fifth highway death of the year in Madison county.

The accident occurred about 9:15 a.m. on the North Branch hill. Christensen, who has been working a night shift at the Firestone plant in Des Moines, was driving home to Winterset from work. He had crossed the North Branch bridge and started up the hill when he met the truck coming down the hill.

The truck was driven by Mrs. Alma M. Carter of Stewartsville, Mo. She was not injured.

It was considered possible that Christensen had become sleepy while driving. Mrs. Carter had pulled her truck off onto the right shoulder in an apparent effort to avoid the collision. Christensen's car went down a deep bank after the crash and he was thrown out. He died as ambulance attendants were taking him into Madison county Memorial hospital at Winterset. His car was completely demolished and the truck heavily damaged.

Mr. Christensen was born near Winterset, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Christensen, and spent his entire life in this community. He graduated from the Winterset high school with the class of 1940. He was married to Lucille Dick, and they were parents of six children.

For many years he was employed at the Jackson Electric shop in Winterset, but had been working in Des Moines for several months.

Surviving are his wife and six children, ranging in age from 3 years to 12 years. They are Vernon, William, Edward, Sheryl, Ronnie and Linda. He also leaves his father, Harry Christensen and step-mother of Winterset; and two brothers, John Christensen of California and Raymond Christensen of Joplin, Ill.

Funeral services had not been completed as the Madisonian went to press Wednesday.
