Death Occurred Thursday at Memorial Hospital in Winterset
Chester R. Buchanan, a prominent citizen of the St. Charles community, died Thursday, April 7, at Madison county Memorial hospital in Winterset, after an extended illness. He was 68 years of age.
Mr. Buchanan was born Oct. 12, 1886 on a farm northeast of St. Charles, a son of Charles J. and Mary Buchanan. He was educated in the schools of the community, graduating from the St. Charles high school.
He was married Dec. 12, 1911 to Margaret J. Picken. They made their home on a farm south of St. Charles.
Mr. Buchanan was widely known throughout southeast Madison county. He long was active in community affairs, including 15 years as a member of the Truro school board and service as township trustee. He served for many years in the United Presbyterian church of St. Charles.
He is survived by his wife; a son, Chester R. Buchanan, Jr.; a daughter, Mrs. Ferne E. Olson; four grandchildren; a brother, Charles M. Buchanan of Des Moines; and three sisters, Mrs. Beulah Anderson of St. Charles and Mrs. Martha Dawson and Mrs. Hazel Sumner of Des Moines.
Funeral services were held Sunday from the St. Charles United Presbyterian church, conducted by the Rev. Robert C. Farb. Burial was made in the St. Charles cemetery.
