Albert Strong

The following news item, concerning the life of Albert Strong, former editor of the Winterset Madisonian, was taken from the April 3 issue of the Fort Dodge Messenger. It shows the active life, in which he participated in Fort Dodge.

An attack of heart trouble caused the death of Albert Strong, resident of Fort Dodge, for thirty-one years at 10 o'clock Saturday night at his home, on South Twelfth street. Mr. Strong was never of robust health, but he was never ill and his sudden death comes as a shock.

Born in Windom, Ohio, Mr. Strong was educated in Grinnell college in Grinnell from which he was graduated. He engaged in newspaper work in Winterset, Iowa and Emporia, Kansas, retiring thirty-one years ago at which time he came to Fort Dodge, where he has lived ever since.

Mr. Strong had many interests to which he gave his time and attention and to which his keen mind and ability to study and write were a distinct asset. Prominent among these are Masonry. Active in this order and the recipient of many of its high offices, he was also a great student of it and probably few were better versed in the origin and history of the order.

Another subject to which he devoted much of his time was geneology. Coming from a distinguished line of Colonial settlers, Mr. Strong was a member of the Sons of Revolution and one of the founders of the state chapter of the Mayflower Descendants. He was the author of the " The Strongs of Strongville" which received many commendatory reviews from publications interested in geneology.

A thirty-second degree Mason Scottish Rite of the Des Moines consistory, Mr. Strong was past master of the Blue Lodge at Winterset, past high priest of the Delta Chapter 51 Fort Dodge, Past Commander of the Calvary, No. 24, Fort Dodge, past patron of the Eastern Star, Winterset.

Mr. Strong was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian church, a loyal supporter of the church in all its activities upon whose friendship the pastor could always count. A man of retiring nature, his sterling qualities of loyalty and honesty and his keen mind were greatly appreciated by those who knew him. It is said that probably no man in Fort Dodge, had conducted as many Masonic ritual burials as Mr. Strong, and those who heard him were invariably impressed with the dignity, sincerity and sympathy of his interpretation. Mr. Strong is survived by his widow and a sister, Miss Virginia Strong of Pacific Grove, California.

Funeral services will take place Tuesday morning at 9:30 at the home with Dr. W. O. Harless, pastor of the First Presbyterian church officiating. Masons and Knights Templar will attend the services in a body.

The body will be taken to Des Moines for burial in the Woodlawn cemetery. At the grave there will be Masonic services conducted by E. H. Johnson. An escort from both the Calvary Commandery and Masonic lodge will accompany the body to Des Moines.
