Wednesday, March 2, 1955EARLHAM MAN DIES WORKING AT QUARRY
County Coroner Paul Eggleston of Winterset returned a report of death from natural causes, in the case of Elwin E. Sheppard of Earlham, whose death occurred last Friday at the Earlham rock quarry.
Mr. Sheppard died suddenly while engaged in operating a power crane scoop at the quarry.

Elwin E. Shepherd, son of Albert H. and Blanche Kitzmiller Shepherd, was born July 6, 1900 at Maine, Wisconsin.
He grew to young manhood in this locality. He was united in marriage with Edith Kampden and to this union four children were born: Lois Conway of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Gordon Shepherd of Gary, Indiana; Rodney Shepherd of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Richard Shepherd of New York City.
“Al” as his friends knew him, moved to Earlham about 11 years ago.
His wife preceded him in death November 1950. His kind and courteous manner and strong sense of right and duty won the respect of all who knew him, and the entire community is saddened by his untimely death February 25th, 1955 while at work.
October 1, 1952 he was united in marriage with Clella Price.
He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife, his four children, his mother, one sister, five grandsons, one brother, two step-daughters, nieces, nephews and many, many friends. He was a member of the Church of Christ at Earlham.
He was a member of Madison Lodge No. 568 A.F. & A.M., a member of the Scottish Rite Masons, and Za-Ga-Zig Shrine Temple in Des Moines.
Services were held at the Earlham Church of Christ on Monday, February 28 at 10 a.m. with Rev. Alex Grossnickle officiating. Masonic rites were also conducted.
W. F. Price sang, “The City Four Square,” with Mrs. Earl Schalkle as accompanist.
Mrs. Merritt Harris and Mrs. Leonard Welch had charge of the flowers, and the casket bearers were: M. S. Moore, Charles Sandusky, Wayne Stanley, Frank Clampitt, Melvin Vaughn and Chas. Kasal.
Out of town relatives were: Dean Slocum, Mr. and Mrs. Oral Afflack all of Des Moines; Mr. and Mrs. Dale Callison of Winterset; Mr. and Mrs. Tom Ham of Peru, Iowa.

Thursday, March 3, 1955Elwin E. Shepherd Died Suddenly Friday
Elwin E. Shepherd died suddenly shortly after noon last Friday while at work at the Concrete Materials quarry east of town. Mr. Shepherd was a shovel operator. He was 55 years old.
Funeral services were held at the Earlham Church of Christ Monday at 10:00 a.m. after which the body was sent to Crandon, Wisconsin. Mrs. Shepherd, Sherry Price, M. S. Moore and Mr. and Mrs. Claire Waugh went to Wisconsin to attend services there. Interment was in Lakeside cemetery at Crandon, Wisconsin.
The Earlham services were in charge of Rev. Alex Grossnickle. W. F. Price, accompanied by Mrs. Earl Schalkle, furnished the music. Casket bearers were: Charles Sandusky, Wayne Stanley, Charles Kasal, Melvin Vaughn, Frank Clampitt and M. S. Moore.
