MARTHA SODERLAND DIES IN DES MOINES

Born In Winterset in Early Days; Succumbs at Age of 89 Years

Mrs. Martha F. Soderland, a former Winterset resident, died Jan. 6 at the Mercy hospital in Des Moines after a few days illness. She was 89 years of age.

Death resulted from injuries sustained in a fall at her home in Des Moines.

Mrs. Soderland was the former Mattie Rhodes and was born in Winterset July 2, 1856. She was the youngest child of the Rev. James and Eliza Rhodes of this community.

Much of her early life was spent on a farm in the Hoosier Prairie neighborhood, near Winterset, and she also spent some years in Des Moines. When she was 10 years old she watched the first railroad train come into Des Moines. Her entire life was spent in Madison, Polk and Story counties.

She was married May 29, 1875 to Nelson Soderland. They moved to Winterset and lived here until 1907 when they removed to Des Moines, where she had lived the last 39 years.
