James A. Smith, 73-year-old Des Moines resident, died at his home on Douglas avenue, last Thursday afternoon, about two o'clock from a heart attack. Mr. Smith was a brother of Ed M. Smith and Will J. Smith of Winterset and had visited here a number of times. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts, but had lived in Des Moines the past 49 years. He had been auditor of the Homesteaders insurance company for the past twenty-eight years.
He is survived by his wife, a daughter, Mrs. Lloyd Pashong, and a granddaughter, Parry and the two brothers of Winterset. The Rev. James A. Mordy, pastor of the Cottage Grove Presbyterian church of which he had been a member for over thirty years, conducted his funeral services, Saturday afternoon, at two o'clock at the Carl White funeral home and burial was in the Masonic cemetery in Des Moines.
Those driving from here to attend the services were Mr. and Mrs. Will J. Smith and daughter, Miss Gertrude, Mr. and Mrs. Ed M. Smith, Mrs. P. K. Graening, Mrs. John C. Gorman, Mr. and Mrs. Glen Smith, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Smith, Mrs. Laura Brandt and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Clampitt.
