ART THOMPSON, Winterset

Art Thompson, 79, of Winterset died June 30, 2007.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 6, at the First United Methodist Church in Winterset with the Rev. Dr. Beverlee Bell officiating. Visitation will be Thursday from noon to 8 p.m. at Collins Oak Park Chapel in Winterset, with the family receiving friends from 6–8 p.m. Burial will be at Winterset Cemetery.

Art Thompson was born March 3, 1928, to Archie and Maggie (Stafford) Thompson of Moravia. He was raised in Knoxville and became a resident of Winterset in the mid-1960s. His marriage to Lois Eleanor Hart took place Sept. 21, 1968, in Wathena, Kan. For many years, early in his life, Art operated his own construction company. Later, he was a Winterset police officer for 17 years and served as acting chief on several occasions before retiring in 1990. Art was honored to guard Pope John Paul II and President Ronald Reagan when they visited Madison County. He was a member of the Madison County Peace Officers Association.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Leland Thompson; and three sisters, Margaret Albaugh, Charlotte Lewis and LaRue Keith.

He is survived by his wife, Lois, of Winterset; his children — Karen Thompson of Washington State, A.C. Thompson of Washington, D.C., Kevin Thompson of California, Jay Fritz of Des Moines, Julie Bunch of Indianola, Janeen Fritz of Ankeny and Darin Thompson of Winterset; a brother, Lawrence Thompson of Santa Rosa, Calif.; a sister, Virginia Kimberling of Des Moines; and 15 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions given to the family will be directed to the Winterset Care Center South Activity Fund or Madison County Health Trust
