Mont Johnson, son of John and Mary Johnson was born in Jasper county, Iowa, August 9, 1856 and passed away at the home of his son in Winterset, Iowa on July 2, 1933, aged 76 years, 10 months and 23 days. He moved with his parents to Polk county where he engaged in farming for many years. He came to Madison county in 1900 where he located on a farm. In 1903 he engaged in the grocery business with the firm of Cline & Johnson. He continued in this enterprise for a period of ten years.
He was united in marriage to Nancy Earlywine in March 1880 and to this union three sons were born, one of these dying in infancy.
Mr. Johnson united with the Church of Christ in Rising Sun, Iowa in his early youth. He served as a deacon in the congregation for many years transfering his membership when he moved to Winterset. He has always been a loyal worker and supporter of the church and served as a trustee of this congregation. He gave of his time and thought and substance. He was a liberal supoorter of the cause of his Christ. He put "first things first". The church was first.
He will be missed in the councils of the church.
Those who mourn his going are his two sons; Ellis Johnson, Van Nuys, California; Will Johnson, Winterset, Iowa; one brother and one sister, E. G. Johnson, San Francisco, California and Mrs. Edward Van Horn,Rising Sun, Iowa; seven grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren; and the associates in business and church circles. These will also mark the vacancy left in his going.
Service at Christ of Christ at 1:30 Wednesday by the Rev. H. L. Olmstead. Burial at Rising Sun, Iowa.
