John Thomas Steele was born Jan. 16, 1863, in Newark, N. J. He passed away Sept. 28, 1940. His age at death was 77 years, 8 months and 12 days.
He came with his parents and grew up near Macksburg, Webster township, Madison county, Iowa.
He was first united in marriage to Kate Cochran who preceded him in death. Three children were born to this union: Jay W. Steele of Macksburg, Ed of Anamosa and a little girl who died in infancy.
He was afterwards married to Grace Wilcox on Oct. 25, 1901. To this union two children were born--Lysle of Albert Lea, Minn., and Mrs. Ethel Dumas of Duluth, Minn.
Besides the children he leaves his wife whose home is in Morgan, Minn. He leaves four brothers, Joseph of Sioux City, Ia., William of Algona, Ia., James C. of Macksburg and Milton of San Diego, Cal.
The last 31 years of his life were spent in the ministry in Iowa, Louisiana, South Dakota and Minnesota. His last charge was with the Presbyterian church in Morgan, Minn., where he retired on account of ill health.
The body reached the Watts funeral home on Monday and the funeral was held Tuesday, Oct. 1, 1940 in the Macksburg Methodist church. The service was conducted by his brother, the Rev. Joseph Steele of Sioux City, who has spent 50 years in the ministry of the Congregational churches of Iowa. It was his dying request that this service should be so conducted. The Rev. Bernard Weetman, local pastor, assisted. Music by Mrs. Earle Whitworth, Mrs. Neva Baker, Wayne Crow, Jay Thompson. Nephews served as pallbearers and interment was made in the Moon cemetery.
