Luther Grosscup

Luther Grosscup was born May 14, 1858 in Ashland, Ohio and departed this life in Fort Wayne, Indiana, April 6, 1932, aged 73 years, 10 months and 22 days. He was married to Alice Chiedress at Commerce, Iowa, March 3, 1889. She died at their home in Valley Junction, Iowa, June 16, 1912, leaving two children, a son 17 years old and a daughter 11 years old. On him evolved the difficult task of caring for and educating these children.

Most of his life was spent in Iowa. He moved to Madison county, Iowa with his parents at the age of 18 and engaged in farming until he moved to Valley Junction in 1904 and entered the coal business, remaining there until December 1930 when he left for Fort Wayne to make his home with his daughter.

He and his wife joined the Methodist church in Valley Junction and he took a deep interest in the affairs of the church.

He was a member of the Modern Woodmen of America for 35 years.

He leaves to mourn his loss, a daughger, Mrs. Merritt Hartman of Fort Wayne; a son, Glenn Grosscup of Chicago; a sister, Miss Alice Grosscup of Winterset; brother, Rev. Daniel P. Grosscup of Spokane, Washington, and one granddaughter, Frances Alice Grosscup of Chicago.

He was a man of lovable disposition, always patient, self-effacing, uncomplaining, generous to all. Death came to him as a welcome release from an ailing body.

Funeral services were held April at the Methodist church in Valley Junction and burial at Jordan cemetery.
