REV. DAVID SHENTON OF JEFFERSON, DIES

Had Served Five Years As Pastor of Winterset Methodist Church

The Rev. David J. Shenton of Jefferson, a widely known Iowa Methodist minister who for five years served as pastor of the Winterset Methodist church, died on Wednesday of last week at a hospital in Des Moines.

The Rev. Mr. Shenton succumbed to pneumonia, which followed a heart attack sustained several days before. He had been ill but a few days. He was 60 years of age.

The Rev. Mr. Shenton was pastor of the local Methodist church from 1927 to 1932. From 1932 to 1937 he served as spuerintendent of the Council Bluffs district. Prior to that he had been superindendent of the Clarinda district. He was a member of the Iowa-Des Moines conference for 38 years.

At the time of his death, the minister was serving his fourth year at the Jefferson Methodist church.

Near surviving relatives include his wife; a daughter, Mrs. E. S. Newlon of Council Bluffs; and a brother, Seth Shenton, publisher of the Indianola Herald.

Funeral services were held at Jefferson Saturday, and burial was made at Atlantic.

Widely Known Pastor Dies In Hospital. Located Here From 1922-1927

The Rev. David J. Shenton, 60, Jefferson, widely know pastor in the Iowa-Des Moines conference of the Methodist church, died Wednesday afternoon of last week at the Iowa Methodist hospital in Des Moines. Rev. Shenton, who served as the pastor of the Winterset Methodist church during the years, 1922 to 1927, had only been ill a few days. He suffered a heart attack, which was followed by pneumonia. Services were held Saturday morning at the Methodist church in Jefferson. Burial was made in Atlantic, Ia.

Rev. Shenton had served his fourth year as pastor in Jefferson and had been a member of the Iowa-Des Moines conference 38 years. Before going to Jefferson he was superintendent of the Council Bluffs district from 1932 to 1937. Previously he had been superintendent of the Clarinda district.

He headed the delegation to the general conference at two different sessions. Other towns where he served as pastor were Audubon, Shelby, Russell, Blockton and Allerton.

Survivors are his wife; a daughter, Mrs. E. S. Newlon, Council Bluffs; and one brother, Seth Shenton, publisher of the Indianola Herald, Indianola.
