Monday, September 2, 2002Vada Ellen Criss, 97, formerly of Topeka, died Saturday, Aug. 31, 2002, at an Atchison care center. She was born Nov. 27, 1904, in Earlham, Iowa, to John W. and Ardelia Lamb Mabbitt.
She worked as a moisture tester for the Steinite Laboratory in Atchison and then was a nurse's aide at Atchison Hospital for three years. She was a nurse's aide at Santa Fe Hospital in Topeka from November 1951 until 1969. She returned to Atchison in May 1997. She was a member of West Side Christian Church in Topeka.
She married Clark Criss on Oct. 17, 1923, in Winterset, Iowa. They divorced. A daughter, Ruth Moerman, died in February 1991. Two great-grandsons also died.
Survivors include two sons, Lloyd O. Criss, West Liberty, Iowa, and Myles J. Criss, Corvallis, Ore.; a daughter, Norma Kuhn, Atchison; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.
Prayer services at 7 p.m. Friday at Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home in Atchison will be followed by visitation until 8:30 p.m. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Jackson Township Cemetery in Pitzer, Iowa. Memorial contributions may be made to Medicalodge in Atchison, 66002.

Vada Ellen Criss, 97, of Atchison, Kan., died Aug. 31, 2002 at the Atchison Medicalodge.
Prayer services will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home in Atchison with the Rev. Lee Hendon officiating. Visitation will follow until 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Graveside services and burial will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7 at Jackson township cemetery, Pitzer (Eppard-Pitzer).
Vada Criss was born Nov. 27, 1904 to John W. and Ardelia (Lamb) Mabbitt of Earlham. On Oct. 17, 1923 she married Clark Criss in Winterset. They were later divorced. She was employed as a moisture tester for the Steinite Lab in Atchison before working as a nurse' aide at the Atchison Hospital for three years. From November of 1951 until 1969 Vada worked as a nurse's aide for the Sante Fe Railroad Hospital in Topeka, Kan. She moved back to Atchison in May of 1997. She was a member of the Westside Christian Church in Topeka.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, four brothers, three sisters and two great-grandsons.
She is survived by two sons, Lloyd O. Criss of West Liberty and Myles J. Criss of Corvallis, Ore.; a daughter, Norma Kuhn (Mrs. Larry) of Atchison; 11 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.
