OBITUARY
Eliza Jane McCoy was born in Grange township, Knox county, Illinois, June 15th, 1854. She was one of a family of six children, three sons and three daughters, of James Madison McCoy and his wife, Margaret Wise McCoy, pioneers who came to Illinois in 1845 from Highland county, Ohio. Here she grew to young womanhood and on November 14, 1880, was joined in marriage to Lawrence A. Wise, also of Highland county.
The young couple began farming and continued to live in Knox county, until March 1st, 1902, when they moved to Adair county, Iowa. On March 1st, 1905, they moved to Madison county, and in 1906 moved to their own farm, 2 ¾ miles south of Earlham, which is still the home place. On March 1st, 1939, Mr. and Mrs. Wise retired from farming, and moved to Earlham, Iowa, where they made their home during their final years.
It was the greatest pleasure for Mr. and Mrs. Wise to entertain their friends in their home, and this practice was continued until the last. One of the occasions that caused them the most of pleasure was the celebration of their golden wedding anniversary in Earlham on November 14, 1930, this celebration was attended by a host of friends and relatives, who came from Illinois and Missouri as well as Iowa.
Mrs. Wise was a gracious hostess, a faithful friend, and a loving and devoted mother. The church was always a very vital part of her life. While yet a young woman, she united with the fellowship of the Methodist church, and was a regular attendant at both the Sunday School and worship service as long as her health permitted.
Her husband preceded her in death on April the 11th, 1934. Since that time, she, through her own expressed wishes, continued to remain in her own home in Earlham, until one week before her death, when, because of necessity, she was brought to the home of her son, H. Earl Wise, in Stuart, where, just at the close of day Friday evening, July the 26th, she passed on into the great beyond, being at the time of her death, 86 years, one month and 12 days of age.
She leaves to mourn her passing, one brother, James McCoy of Dexter, four sons, Dr. Carl T. Wise of Duluth, Minnesota; H. Earl Wise of Stuart; J. Lloyd Wise of Chicago, Illinois; and Dr. L. M. Wise of Los Angeles, California; and two grandchildren, Patricia Ann and Mary Jane Wise of Chicago, Illinois. One daughter, Leota Pear Wise, who died in infancy preceded her in death. A host of friends join the relatives in their sorrow over their bereavement.
