Wednesday, November 20, 1940BIRD MILES DIED HERE THURSDAY
Widely-Known Winterset Man Had Been in Frail Health
Butler Bird Miles, well known Winterset resident, died at his home here last Thursday morning about 3 o'clock. Mr. Miles had a serious illness two years ago, and was forced to give up his work, but his last illness was of short duration, and his death came as a distinct shock to his friends and relatives.
Mr. Miles who was 57 years of age, was a son of the late Dan T. Miles and Jessie Bird Miles. He was born in Patterson, Nov. 22, 1883 and lived there until his parents moved to Winterset when he was a young man. He attended the local schools, and was married to Miss Loraine Koser, Sept. 15, 1910.
Shortly after their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Miles moved to Ottumwa where he was a cattle buyer for the John Morrell company for thirteen years. In 1923 they moved to Kansas City, Mo., where he was with the Swift and Henry Commission company, and in 1935 they moved to Chicago, where they lived until eighteen months ago when they returned to Winterset.
While in Chicago Mr. Miles was associated with the National Livestock commission company and served as vice president of the organization until a severe illness forced him to give up his work.
He was a man who in his years of dealing in livestock, maintained a reputation for a high degree of integrity. His standing among livestock men was attested by the number of associates from far and near who came to pay the last tribute of respect to one whom they held in high esteem. Not the least of his sterling qualities was his love of his home and his devotion to his family.
"Bird", as he was familiarly known here, is survived by his wife, and their two children: David of Chicago, and Miss Barbara, a student at the University of Illinois. He also leaves one brother and three sisters: Blaine Miles of Winterset; Mrs. E. H. Emery of Chicago; Mrs. A. N. Smith of Dunlap; and Mrs. E. O. McClurg of Des Moines. His parents and a brother, have preceded him in death.
The Rev. W. P. Fink and the Rev. Tom Foglesong conducted his funeral services which were hled at the Anderson home for funerals Saturday, Nov. 16 at 2 p.m., and burial was in the Winterset cemetery.
The friends and business associates who served as pall bearers were Mike Breen, Eli Greenwood, William Jackson, George Shaw, Phil Wilkinson and Glen Newton.
