Long-Time Resident Here in Failing Health For Several Years
Mayme Callahan, a well known resident of the Winterset community practically all her life, died at the Memorial hospital in Winterset Sunday, Oct. 2. She was 81 years of age.
Miss Callahan's health had been declining for several years after being stricken with arthritis. There had been other complications in recent months.
She was the eldest child of the late of Patrick and Catherine Flynn Callahan, and was born in Scranton, Pa., July 19, 1874. When she was 2 years of age she came with her parents to Winterset. She attended the public schools and as a young woman was employed as a maid for several prominent families of this community.
In 1912 she went to her parents' farm in Union township which was her home until 1938, when she moved into Winterset.
Miss Callahan leaves a brother, Thomas Callahan of Havre, Mont., and two sisters, Mrs. Katherine Ryan of Chicago and Miss Nellie Callahan of Winterset.
In accordance with the wishes expressed by Miss Callahan prior to her death, no funeral services were held. The body was taken to Des Moines for cremation.
Note: The cremains are buried in St. Patrick's Cemetery.
