County Commissioner Jacoby Shoots and Kills His Neighbor, Milton Nelson, The Particulars
Butte, Neb., January 11 – M. Jacoby, county commissioner of Boyd county, who lived seven miles east of Butte, left home about sunrise this morning to attend a session of the county commissioners. He stopped at Milton Nelson’s, his neighbor, to get him to accompany him to Butte.
Mr. Nelson was out milking his cows when Mr. Jacoby approached him rather nervously, which was noticed by Nelson’s 13 year old boy, who called his father’s attention to it, whereupon Jacoby, making a few remarks, pulled out his revolver and shot Nelson in the back of the head. Nelson died instantly. Jacoby then walked away about 100 yards and deliberately took his own life by shooting himself through the head. Jacoby and Nelson have been close friends for years. It is believed Jacoby must have been temporarily insane. – Des Moines Leader.
Mr. Nelson was well known in this county, having lived here for some time about two years ago. He was a brother of Harvey Nelson, of Jackson township, and an uncle of Horace Nelson, who was an employee of the Fair Store last year. The funeral services were held at the home of Harvey Nelson on Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. De Tar, of Winterset.

The remains of Milton Nelson were shipped here and arrived from Kansas last Saturday and were taken to a cemetery south of town and interred. Deceased was a brother of Harve Nelson, who lives between here and Winterset. Mr. Nelson was murdered by one of his neighbors who came to his place on an errand of business. While Mr. Nelson had his back turned, he drew a pistol and shot him in the head, then went a few yards and shot himself. No cause can be given for his conduct except that he had become suddenly insane, for he and Mr. Nelson had been intimate friends and were on very friendly terms.

About a year or so ago Milton Nelson of Jackson township, brother of A. H. Nelson of the same place, left this county and went west, locating at some point in Nebraska.
The latter part of last week his relatives here received the sad intelligence that he had been murdered, and from the meager reports that we obtained the facts are about as follows:
Mr. Nelson was out milking in the evening when a neighbor came up and asked him to accompany him to town. Mr. Nelson replied, “all right, just wait until I am through.” Without another word being spoken, the neighbor fired a revolver at Mr. Nelson, the ball striking him in the back of the head killing him instantly. The man then turned and walked about 100 feet away and placing the gun to his own head fired and he too fell dead. No cause can be attributed to the rash act, as the men were on friendly terms. The man must have been seized with a fit of insanity.
The remains of Mr. Nelson were brought to this county, arriving Saturday, and on Sunday they were interred. He was well known in Jackson township and had many acquaintances in this city. He was a man of about 35 years of age.
