Joe Aeschliman, Winterset

Joe Aeschliman, 64, of Winterset died Tuesday, June 7, 2005, at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines.

Visitation and funeral services for Joe were private. The Rev. Leonard Kenkel and Msgr. Paul Connelly officiated. Ochiltree Funeral Service and Aftercare in Winterset handled the arrangements.

Joe was born April 4, 1941 in Memphis, Tenn., the son of Joseph and Marguerite (Saint) Aeschliman. During his working career, Joe was employed by the Des Moines Register as a mailer for over 30 years.

He was a member of St. Edwards Catholic Church in Afton where he took his family including his mother-in-law to church every Sunday. He was also a member of Teamsters Local #4.

Joe enjoyed spending time with his family, cooking, planting flowers, mowing, woodworking, being the family fix-it man and fishing with his wife.

Joe also supported the charitable efforts of the Des Moines Mailers' Union Fund by collecting and sorting about 1000 pop cans each week from the Register's offices and production facility. He also pulled the aluminum tabs from each can to personally deliver to Camp Courageous in Monticello. These efforts allowed him to support various causes that he believed in.

Joe is survived by his wife, Cheri of Winterset and children, Cheri Jo Tuttle (husband Doug) of Winterset, Rob Aeschliman of Dubuque and Will Aeschliman of Des Moines. He is also survived by three children from a previous marriage, six sisters, three brothers, and 10 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters.

Memorials may be directed to St. Edwards Catholic Church in Afton and Camp Courageous.

Coordinator note: Obituaries are typed in just as they appear in the newspaper, without additional information. Descendant Mona Aeschliman provided this information in 2023: he had 4 children from previous marriages.
