MAHLON BROWN

Mahlon Brown was born Aug. 8, 1847 in Belmont county, Ohio. He was the youngest of a family of seven children, all of whom have preceeded him to a better world.

In 1867 he traveled by train to Monroe, by stage to Des Moines, and on to Winterset. From here he went to Adams county, where he engaged in farming for ten years; returning then to Scott township, Madison County, where he resided for about 31 years. Because of ill health, he then moved to Winterset where he lived until his death, which occurred on March 23, 1920.

In 1869, he was united in marriage to Alice Bellis of Madison county. To this union were born eight children; Will of Roswell, N.M.; Mrs. C. C. Bowlsby and Mrs. Brusnaben of Des Moines, Mrs. H. C. Fredrickson of Wendall, Minn.; Mrs. Walter Holmes of Hensler, N.D., and Frank and Mrs. Nellie Sanders of Winterset. These, with his wife and 16 grandchildren survive him, one child having died in infancy.

He was converted at the age of 25 at the old Lincoln school house in Scott township and later joined the Bethel M. E. church, of which he was a member until he moved to Winterset, when he became a member of the Methodist church in town.

He has been a great sufferer the past year and often expressed the wish that he might be taken from this world of suffering. A good husband, father and faithful friend has left us for a little while, whose place can never be filled, but by this loss heaven seems nearer and we shall hope to make an unbroken family in that fairer home.

Funeral services were conducted from the Baptist church by Rev. Jackson Giddens and the remains laid to rest in the Winterset city cemetery.
