Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Rhodes of Winterset, a resident of this community for many years, died at her home here, June 27th, after a long period of failing health. She was 77 years old.
Mrs. Rhodes was born Mary Elizabeth Hutton in Indiana, in 1956. Her early life was spent in that state. As a young woman she moved with her parents to Iowa, locating near Commerce. She was married to William Cyrus Rhodes on April 27th, 1875. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1925, and a few years later in 1931, Mr. Rhodes died.
Mrs. Rhodes was a successful public school teacher and an active member of the Christian church, later transferring her membership to the Church of Christ. About eight years ago she suffered a severe paralytic stroke and since that time her health has been impaired. She was a charter member of the Woodmen Circle lodge, of which she held most of the offices. She was also a member of the American Legion auxiliary and the Arc-en-Ciel.
Eleven of the thirteen children survive Mrs. Rhodes. They are James W. of Los Angeles, Cal., Elmer E. of Detroit, Mich., Mrs. C. N. Smith of Bellvue Neb., Mrs. J. L. Cline of Des Moines, Mrs. T. N. Linge of Decatur Ill., Mrs. Cain Bishop of Winterset, Earl H. of Dayton, Ohio Paul L. of Des Moines, William W. of Omaha, Neb., Mrs. Arthur Strong of Winterset and Jesse A. who was living at home. Two of the children Harry and Charles had preceded their parents in death. Mrs. Rhodes is also survived by three brothers, three sisters, thirty grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 9 a. m. Friday in the Winterset Church of Christ, the Rev. H. L. Olmstead was in charge. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
