Page 1DEATH COMES TO CHAS. MCMILLAN
Prominent Winterset Business Man Dies After Short Illness
Charles McMillan, for many years a clothing merchant of Winterset and vice president of the Madison County State bank of Winterset, died Wednesday night, October 23rd at his home of West Court avenue. Mr. McMillan was 75 years of age and had been ill with heart trouble several times during the past year. He was not confined to his bed much of the time, however, and he and Mrs. McMillan spent last winter in Florida. While in Winterset, he took an active interest in the affairs of the bank and was down town nearly every day prior to his death.
He was ill last Wednesday however and heart trouble caused his death at 11:30 o'clock that night.
Mr. McMillan was a son of Thomas and Mary McMillan and was born August 13, 1854 in Lafayette, Indiana. While yet an infant, he came to Knoxville, with his family. He lived in Knoxville until in 1882 when he and Mrs. McMillan came to Winterset where they have since resided. He was married to Mrs. McMillan, who was Miss Georgia Spellman in 1881. They were the parents of two children, Miss Ruth, who died in April 1912 and Hugh who died in October 1913.
After Mr. McMillan's arrival in Winterset, he was associated in business with his brother-in-law, D. T. Welch, for several years. They owned the clothing store in partnership. Later, Mr. McMillan was the sole owner and for a number of years Charles Rowe was his partner in the firm of McMillan & Rowe. In 1926 Mr. McMillan sold his interest in the clothing establishment to Dale Bond and he and Mrs. McMillan had traveled extensively since that time. Mr. McMillan had been vice president of the Madison County State bank for the past 23 years.
Mr. McMillan had as many friends over the county as has any Winterset business man. He was always jolly and had a friendly greeting for everyone. He took an active interest in the affairs of the community and he will be greatly missed by the people of Winterset and this county.
The Rev. Paul Main Fowler, pastor of the Winterset Presbyterian church, assisted by the Rev. A. P. Keast, pastor of the local Methodist church, conducted the services at the McMillan home Saturday morning, October 26th at 11 o'clock, and burial was made in the Winterset cemetery. Mr. McMillan is survived by his wife, Mrs. McMillan and a number of nieces and nephews.
