Death of Mrs. Rachel Shannon

Mrs. Rachel Margaret Shannon, one of the pioneers of Winterset, died Friday, April 5th at her home in the southeast part of town, after an illness of several months. Had Mrs. Shannon lived until May 8th, she would have been 83 years of age.

Mrs. Shannon had been in good health, until last December, when she fell while hanging Christmas decorations, and broke her hip. She enjoyed her home and had always had her daughters home with her on Christmas day. It was on December 20th that she broke her hip and since that time complications set in and she had been in poor health. Two weeks ago, her condition became critical and she gradually became worse.

The deceased, who was a daughter of Edwin R. and Catherine Guiberson, was born in Millersburg, Holmes county, Ohio, May 8, 1846. When she was a child three years of age, she came here with her parents and had since made Winterset her home. She was the youngest of eight children, all of whom have passed on. She was married to Joseph Ritner Shannon, January 3, 1867 and they were the parents of two daughters, Mrs. Kittie Lowe and Mrs. Bessie Schwaner. Mr. Shannon died July 13, 1912 and since 1917 Mrs. Shannon had lived alone and cared for her own home.

The Reverend Paul M. Fowler, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, conducted the funeral services at the home on East South street, Sunday April 7th at 2:30 o'clock and burial was made in the Rock City cemetery.
