Walter DeForest Downs, son of David and Elizabeth Downs, was born on the Downs farm near St. Charles, Iowa, Jan. 31, 1874, and passed to his reward Sunday evening, Oct. 20, 1940 at the age of 66 years, 8 months and 2 days.
He grew to manhood on the farm and has spent his entire life in this community with the exception of two years spent in New Virginia, Iowa.
He was united in marriage to Miss Daisy Caskey of Truro on June 12, 1901. To this union one daughter was born, who passed away in infancy.
He united with the Church of Christ in St. Charles many years ago and has lived a devoted Christian life through the years.
He was an honored member of the Eastern Star lodge No. 174 of St. Charles.
Those to mourn his going besides his wife, are two brothers, James and Cash of St. Charles, 27 nephews and nieces and many friends.
Funeral services were conducted by his pastors, Revs. Clayton and Marguerite Shepard at 2 p.m., on Wednesday, assisted by Rev. ---- and Rev. Baird. Six of the nephews acted as pall bearers.
Interment was made in the St. Charles cemetery.

Page 8, Column 466 Year Old Carpenter Dies
Walter D. Downs, 66-yerar-old St. Charles resident, died Sunday night at his home following a period of illness. He was born in St. Charles and had spent most of his lifer in and near that vicinity.
Mr. Downs had worked at the carpenter trade during his active life and for several years had been the secretary of the St. Charles Telephone Exchange. He was a member of Model Lodge 315 a. F. & A. M., 40 years, and also a member of Model Chapter OES, 174, St. Charles. He was born in 1874, the son of David and Elizabeth Hartman Downs.
The surviving relatives are his wife, Daisy Downs; two brothers, Cassius E. and James of St. Charles, many nephews and nieces and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at the Christian church conducted by the Rev. Clayton Shepard, Wednesday afternoon. Burial was made in the St. Charles cemetery. Masonic ritualistic services were held at the grave.
