St. Charles--(Special)--Nov. 12-
J. A. Downs, 77, passed away on Wednesday at Clarinda, following a long period of illness, but a stroke of paralysis hastened the end. Funeral services were conducted at the Christian church by Rev. C. P. Shepard Friday afternoon with burial in the St. Charles cemetery.
He was the third brother to go since February. He is survived by four sons, Byron of Truro, Roy of Knoxville, Loy of State Center, David of Winterset and one daughter, Miss Ambrosha also of Winterset. He also leaves three grandchildren, and one brother, Cassius of St. Charles, the only remaining member of a family of ten children.

James Anderson Downs, another South township pioneer passes to his reward. This makes the third death this year in the Downs family. Alfred last February, Walter in October and James the 6th of November.
James A. was the third son of David and Elizabeth Hartman Downs who were early settlers in South township, coming in 1852, before St. Charles was platted. He was born Feb. 15, 1864 near St. Charles, died Nov. 6, 1940, age 76 years, eight months, and 22 days.
James was married to Mary McCandless March 3, 1887 and except five years in Washington state, South township was his home.
He is survived by one daughter, Ambrosha and four sons: Ambarry B. of Truro, David M. of Winterset, Roy G. of Knoxville and Loy H. of State Center.. One brother survives, Cassius E. of St. Charles.
Funeral services were held at the Christian church of St. Charles Friday afternoon, Nov. 8, conducted by the Rev. C. P. Shepherd, with interment in the St. Charles cemetery.

Had Been In Ill Health Past Two Years. Is Buried in St. Charles.
James A. Downs, 76-year-old resident of St. Charles, died Wednesday, Nov. 6,, at his home following a stroke of paralysis. He had been in poor health for about two years and was bedfast since Jan. 5.
Funeral services were held at the Church of Christ in St. Charles Friday afternoon, conducted by the pastor, the Rev. Clayton P. Shepard. The music was furnished by Mesdames Lois Husted, Ethel Brooks, Beulah Anderson and Madge King, Mack Buchannan and Ed Beitzell, with Mrs. Hazel Cheek as accompanist.
Pall bearers were six nephews: Floyd Sherfy, Kenneth Downs and Cash N. Carl, Rex and Don Downs. Burial was made in Str. Charles cemetery.
The surviving relatives are one daughter, Ambrosha Blanche of St. Charles; four sons, Ambary Byron of Truro; David McCandless of Winterset; Loy Harold of State Center and Roy Garold of Knoxville; and one brother, Cash E. Downs of St, Charles, who is now the only remaining member of his father’s family, three grandchildren, twenty-two nieces and nephews and a host of friends. The wife and mother preceded him in death March 4, 1929. Two sons and two brothers preceded him, Alf died in February and Walter just four weeks ago.
James Anderson Downs, son of David and Elizabeth Downs, was born Feb. 15, 1864 on the Downs farm near St. Charles, and died at the age of 76 years, 8 months and 22 days. On March 3, 1887 he was united in marriage to Mary Minerva McCandless and to this union were born seven children, six sons and one daughter, two sons having died in infancy. Mr. Downs spent his entire life in and around St. Charles with the exception of four years and one half near Spokane, Wash.
