Mrs. Frances Farquhar

Frances A. Brown, daughter of Hugh and Harriett Brown, was born in Ohio April 10, 1835. She attended school in Ohio and taught a few terms there.

At the age of 19 she came with her parents to Ottumwa, Iowa. Later they moved to Garden Grove, where she taught school. She was united in marriage to Robert Farquhar April 2, 1857. To this union were born six children. Her husband and five children have preceded her in death; two children dying in infancy and Hugh B. Farquhar, Mrs. Emma Lindsey and Mrs. Amelia Haymond going to their reward later in life. The one remaining daughter is Mrs. Callie Doak, with whom she has made her home since the death of Mr. Farquhar in the year 1911.

In 1868 Mr. and Mrs. Farquhar moved to a farm in the eastern part of Adair county. They lived on this farm until they moved to Winterset in 1889 where she has since made her home.

She was a long time member of the Eastern Star and Relief Corps. She united with the church at a very early age. In Adair county she was an active and faithful member of the Wells Congregational church and after coming to Winterset she became an active member of the Presbyterian church. She had many outside interests and was useful and helpful in many ways, but Christ and the church always came first. She served them with a keen intelligence and a true heart. Everywhere she lived she made many friends and won the love of her neighbors by her never ending kindness to those about her. Until the past five years she read much retaining her interest in others and current events.

After a brief illness she passed away January 17, 1929, aged 93 years, 9 months and 7 days. She leaves besides her daughter, one sister, Susanna Bartlett of Garden Grove, who is 95 years of age, and one brother of Walter Brown of Garden Grove, also nine grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren.

Note: Buried in the Winterset cemetery.
