WILLARD FENIMORE DIES FROM BURNS

Local Automobile Dealer Dies From Effects of Explosion of December 14th

Willard Fenimore, a life long resident of Madison county, died early Saturday morning, December 28th (1929) at the Lutheran hospital in Des Moines, from the effects of burns received in a gasoline explosion on Saturday, December 14th. The definite cause of the explosion is not known, but it is thought that the gasoline, with which he was cleaning some tools, exploded and his clothes caught on fire. His body was fatally burned before the blaze was extinguished.

He was given first aid treatment here, and was rushed in an ambulance to the Lutheran hospital in Des Moines, and received treatment there until the time of his death. After the first few days, it was thought for awhile that he might recover, but the burns were so deep that recovery was impossible.

Mr. Fenimore who was 62 years of age was a son of Mr. and Mrs. William Fenimore and was born in Scott township on August 12, 1867. Mr. Fenimore was raised in the Peru neighborhood. He attended the district schools of Scott township and also did part of the work on the farm of his parents. when twenty-one years of age, he purchased land in his home township and was engaged in farming and stock raising there until in 1903 when he and his family moved to Jackson township. Mr. Fenimore's marriage to Miss Iva A. Moore took place in 1888.

Mr. and Mrs. Fenimore were the parents of three children, whom with the mother, survive him; Virgil, who was associated in business with his father; Mrs. Frank Comp and Mrs. George Finney, both of Jackson township.

The Fenimores moved to Winterset fifteen years ago and have since resided in their home on West Jefferson street. Mr. Fenimore upon leaving the farm, opened a garage and sold Dodge cars for a number of years. For a number of years they were located in a building on the corner of Jefferson street and Second avenue but recently moved to a newly erected building a half block east of the old location.

Mr. Fenimore had been a member of the Methodist Episcopal church for a number of years and in his church the Rev. A. P. Keast conducted funeral services, Monday afternoon, December 30th. The services were held at two o'clock and burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.

Willard Fenimore

Willard, son of William and Martha Ogburn Fenimore was born on a farm near Peru, August 12, 1867. His boyhood and young manhood were spent on the home place. He was united in marriage to Iva A. Moore, December 13, 1888. To this union were born three children, two girls and one boy, Mrs. Mabel Comp, Mrs. Irma Finney and Virgil all of Winterset.

The first fourteen years of their married life were spent on a farm near the Elm Grove church. Then they moved to a farm two miles south of Pitzer, where he was engaged in farming a stock buying for fourteen years, moving to Winterset in 1916. For the past thirteen years he had been engaged in the automobile business here.

He united with the Elm Grove church in his early married life, later transferring to the West Star church, where he was a very active member. On moving to Winterset he united with the Methodist church here, where he had since retained his membership. Soon after coming to town he had a severe sickness and was never able to take the active part he had done in the country. His faith in Christ grew stronger during the months and after he was so seriously injured on December 14th, through his intense suffering he constantly talked of his faith in Christ, repeating over and over, "Thy Will be done," and the 23rd Psalm. During these days his only thoughts were of others. He passed away on December 28th (1929) at the Lutheran hospital in Des Moines at the age of 62 years, 4 months and 16 days.

He leaves besides his wife and three children, four grandchildren; six brothers, Newton of Fargo, Oklahoma; Annon, of Carthage, Missouri; Elmer of Joplin, Missouri; Joseph of Scotts Bluffs, Nebraska; and Eugene of San Antonio, Texas; and five sisters, Mrs. Rhoda Schoenenberger of Indianola; Mrs. Lillie Waechter of Winterset; Mrs. Daisy Creger of Truro; Mrs. Effie Essex of Des Moines; and Mrs. Marie Collings of Cape Girardeau, Missouri.
