Mary Josephine McCleary was born in Madison county, near Van Meter, June 21, 1873 and died at the Ellsworth hospital in Iowa Falls, February 9, 1930, aged 56 years 7 months and 18 days. Her body was returned to her home in Hubbard where she had lived so many years.
Her parents were Mr. and Mrs. C. S. McCleary, long-time residents of Madison county, living south of Van Meter. She was the tenth of eleven children, having two sisters and eight brothers. The two sisters preceded her into the great beyond. The brothers are; A. B. McCleary, Houston, Texas; C. A. McCleary, Winterset; J. O. McCleary, Dexter; W. H. McCleary, S. W. McCleary and C. C. McCleary of St. Charles; E. M. McCleary, Whittier, California; J. F. McCleary of Van Meter.
On October 9, 1903, she was married to G. G. Marshman, of Hubbard and spent twenty-eight years of her life in that place. To this union were born three sons, George of Des Moines, and Blaine and Robert of Hubbard. A niece, Mrs. Allan Wordman of Des Moines was with her in her last hours. While still a girl she united with an Evangelical church near her home, but on coming to Hubbard she cast her lot with the Methodist church and so remained until her death. She leaves to mourn her loss, her husband and her three sons, her brothers, many other relatives and a host of friends.
Interment was made in the Hubbard cemetery, February 11, 1930 from her home in Hubbard, Rev. S. W. Rowley and Rev. G. B. Mueleman, a former pastor of Eagle Grove conducting the services.
