Burtis B. Kilgore

Bert, the son of Benjamin and Mary Kilgore was born in Jones county, Iowa, September 22, 1860.

At the close of the Civil war when Bert was 4 years old, the family came to Madison county and settled on a farm in Monroe township. For a great many years the Kilgores were one of the best known families in the south part of the county. Bert attended school and grew to manhood here and after the death of his father, in 1887, he became the head of the family. He never married and after the death of his sister, Frances in 1912 he and his brother, Silas, lived together in the home neighborhood.

As a boy, he was one of the most active and likable boys in the whole neighborhood and when he grew to manhood there was no other for miles around so genial and accommodating as Bert.

Bert was strong and industrious and did a great deal of heavy work in his early years, but a stroke of paralysis, 25 years ago, left him partly helpless.

During a neighborhood revival many years ago, he accepted Christ and attended church whenever he could. He remained true to Christ and his own helplessness seemed to bring him closer to the one can help most.

He passed away at his brother's home on January 27, 1930 aged 69 years, 4 months and 5 days, leaving beside his brother, Silas, one other brother, Charles Kilgore of Des Moines and a sister, Mrs. Harriett Silverthorne of Creston.

Rev. John T. Hall conducted the funeral service at Tidrick's funeral home Wednesday afternoon, and the burial was in the Hamlin cemetery at the Fellowship church.
