MRS. SUSAN CARTER DIES AT AGE OF 89

Had Lived Past 10 Years at Home of Daughter, Mrs. Harrison Martin

Mrs. Susan C. Carter, a resident of Madison and Warren counties for 84 years, died Monday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Harrison Martin of Winterset. She was 89 years of age.

Mrs. Carter was the daughter of Robert and Elizabeth Pierce Williamson. Her father was a pioneer veterinary in this community. She was born Nov. 15, 1851, in Alexandria, Ind. When she was five years old she came with her parents to Iowa. They settled near what is now Martensdale.

She was married on Jan. 1, 1868, to Benjamin F. Carter. They spent their married life in Warren county and Mr. Carter died in 1922. Ten years ago she came to Winterset to make her home with her daughter, Mrs. Martin.

Mrs. Carter was the mother of 12 children, one of whom died in infancy, and four others having preceded the mother in death. The surviving children are: Mrs. Lillie Johnson of Port Orchard, Wash., Emory and Elza Carter of Des Moines, Mrs. Jessie Wade of Des Moines, Will Carter of Winterset, Okey Carter of Kansas City, Kan., and Mrs. Marion Martin of Winterset.

Funeral services were held Wednesday at Blair Chapel, in charge of the Rev. Arthur Henry of Delta. Burial was made in the Blair Chapel cemetery.

Well Known Woman Dies At Age 89 Following Long Illness

Mrs. Susan Carter, 89-year-old resident of Winterset, died Monday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Harrison Martin, with whom she had made her home the past nine years.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at two o’clock in the Blair Chapel conducted by the Rev. Arthur Henry of Delta, Ia. Burial was made in Blair cemetery.

The surviving relatives are seven children: Mrs. Marion Martin and William Carter of Winterset; Lillie Johnson of Port Orchard, Wash.; Jessie Wade, Emory and Elza Carter of Des Moines and Okey Carter of Kansas City. She leaves 32 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren, and a host of friends both at Wick and Winterset. Her husband and five children preceded her in death.

Susan Carolyn Williamson was born in Madison county, Indiana, near Alexandria, on Nov. 15, 1851, and died at the age of 89 years and 24 days. She moved with her parents to Iowa in 1856 to a farm just west of Martensdale, now known as the Wesley Howell farm.

She was married to Benjamin Franklin Carter on Jan. 1, 1868, and to this union 12 children were born, eight boys and four girls, John Robert, Albert Edgar, Loren Everett, Lillie Ellen, Jessie Elizabeth, Mary Jane, Frank Emory, Elza Earl, William Alexander, Dyle Ruppert, Okey Lionel and Susie Marion.

In 1872 at the age of 20, she was converted while attending a revival meeting at Blair Chapel. She was a faithful and devoted member of the church at Wick, having taught a Sunday school class for 40 years and was president of the Ladies’ Aid society 12 years. When she moved to Winterset she transferred her membership to the Winterset Methodist church where she was a member at the time of her death.
