Elam Hiatt

Elam Hiatt was born at Marion, Indiana, July 31, 1844. At the age of 5 years he moved with his parents to Madison county, Iowa. When 19 years of age he enlisted in the Union army, joining Co. E, 47th Iowa Infantry. He was mustered out of service December 28, 1864.

On March 4, 1869, he was married to Laura Compton. In 1870 with his young wife he moved to O'Brien county, Iowa, where he resided until 1890, when he moved to Oklahoma, locating on a farm east of Edmond. Later he moved to Edmond, where he lived the remainder of his life. To this union were born six sons and two daughters; three sons having preceded him in death, Charley Ellis, William Rufus and Howard Leslie. The living children are: O. A. Hiatt of Valley Wells, Texas; Everette W., Colorado Springs, Colorado; Harry R., Jackson, Mississippi; Mrs. W. A. Chitwood, Edmond, Oklahoma and Mrs. W. O. Lewis of Britton, Oklahoma. All the children attended the funeral. His wife passed to her reward in December 1926.

He confessed his Saviour at the age of 13 and had lived a consistent Christian ever since.

Besides his children he leaves one sister, Mrs. Eveline Hollingsworth of Peru; two brothers, Arthur Hiatt of Peru and Leslie Hiatt of Payette, Idaho and a host of friends to mourn his passing.
