PENN TWP. PIONEER PASSES AWAY

Was a Schoolmate of James A. Garfield in Cuyahoga County, Ohio

Oren Mapes an old resident and respected citizen of Penn township passed away on last Saturday at the age of seventy-three. He was born in Cuyahoga county, Ohio, his father’s farm and that of James A. Garfield’s father, adjoining. The two young men were school mates in the district school. Mr. Mapes settled in Penn township soon after the war and had lived on the farm where he died for the past forty years. He is survived by the wife and four children, Festus and Laura residing at home, Charles of Earlham and Mrs. D. S. Church of Lincoln township.
