Miss Lura Lewis, age 62, who was drowned at Creston Sunday night when flood waters of a creek there threatened her home, was brought to Winterset Tuesday for burial.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon from the Ramsey-Richards funeral home, in charge of the Rev. Ira Ward, pastor of the Baptist church. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
Miss Lewis was a native of this community, and was the daughter of Judge W. H. Lewis, one of the most distinguished early-day citizens of the county. She was a sister of Fred Lewis of Winterset.

Lura Lewis, 62 years of age, was drowned at 1:15 a.m. Monday in Creston when flood waters from a cloudburst swept her from the street in front of her home into a small creek that had become a raging torrent.
Frightened by the severe electrical storm which accompanied the downpour, Miss Lewis had started across the narrow street for higher ground when the floodwaters surrounded her home. Mrs. Luther Evans, living across the street, saw Miss Lewis and called her husband who ran to the edge of the water and was starting out to help her when she fell and was carried away. His son, Dave, plunged into the water but was unable to reach her. The body was found four hours later in a fence three blocks away.

Miss Lewis was born in Madison county, the daughter of Judge and Mrs. W. H. Lewis. She was reared here and received her education in the local schools. For the past forty years she had made her home in Creston.
Funeral Services
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at two o’clock in the Ramsey – Richards funeral home, the Rev. Ira Ward, pastor of the Baptist church, officiating. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
She is survived by one brother, Fred Lewis of Winterset, her parents preceding her in death.
