Friday, January 31, 1890Thos. Stevens of Scott township, one of the earliest settlers of the county, died on the morning of Thursday the 23rd inst., at -- o'clock. Mr. Stevens was only sick on the Friday previous, suffering with --- disease. The funeral was held at the house on Friday last at 1 o'clock. Mr. Stevens was 78 years of age.

Thomas Stevens, of Scott township died at the home place January 23rd, 1890. The deceased was born August 4, 1813 in Harrison county, Ind.; was married to Amelia Grant August 22, 1832. They moved in 1836 to McDonough county, Ill.,and then to Henry county, Ia., in 1840: thence to Madison county, Ia., in 1855.
His companion died October 1st, 1867; his children soon married and moved away, leaving him alone, and for the greater part of some twenty years all alone. Who else could have endured such a ---- life?
His weakness lasted only six days. his suffering was great, but he endured it without a murmur.
Uncle Tommy, as everybody called him, was one of the most honorable and respected citizens of Scott township, a loving father and a great favorite with all his grandchildren. He leaves three sons and a daughter to mourn the loss of a kind father. The remains were laid to rest in the King cemetery.
