SLAIN SHERIFF WAS FORMER RESIDENT

Charles McGriff Had Worked As Barber in Winterset for Three Years

Sheriff Charles V. McGriff of Story county, who was killed in a gun battle at Ames Monday night, was a former resident of Winterset, and still has many friends here.

McGriff came here in about 1901 from Redfield, where he was reared. He went to work in the Ora Miller barber shop as a barber, and later worked in the Darnall shop. He lived here for about three years before going to South Dakota.

McGriff served as sheriff of Dallas county from 1917 until 1929, and had been sheriff of Story county since 1937.

He is survived by four children, Veronica McGriff of Boone, Howard McGriff of Ames, Harry McGriff of Chicago, and Mrs. Ethel McKee of Bossman, Mont.

McGriff was slain Monday night when he headed a posse that was attempting to capture Gunnar Overland of Ames, who had escaped from the Mt. Pleasant State hospital for the insane. The insane fugitive also was killed in the malee.
