J. E. HAMILTON OF WINTERSET PASSES

Injuries Sustained in Fall Fatal to Widely-Known Business Man

Joseph E. Hamilton, one of Winterset's most widely known citizens for many years, died last Saturday at the Winterset hospital as the result of injuries sustained in a fall at his home here last Friday morning.

Born in Walnut township, Mr. Hamilton spent his entire life in Madison county, with the exception of a year in Colorado. Since 1903 his home had been in Winterset, and he became prominent here through his activities in the real estate and banking businesses. He was for several years president of the old First National bank here.

Mr. Hamilton was the last surviving child of Joseph C. W. Hamilton and Mary Draper Hamilton. Born on Oct. 14, 1864, he was educated in the rural schools of the county and as a young man taught school, in addition to operating a farm. He was married, on Oct. 14, 1888, to Catherine Dick. They were the parents of three sons, the eldest of which, Ernest, died in 1931.

In 1902 Mr. Hamilton left the farm, and after spending a year in Colorado, settled in Winterset. This community had been his home since that time.

He is survived by his wife; and two sons, Frank Hamilton of Malvern, and Clair E. Hamilton of Iowa City. He also leaves six grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Monday from the Anderson home for funerals in charge of the Rev. Arthur Keast of Des Moines. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery. The pallbearers were Fred Ruth, J. F. Willcox, W. C. Farlow, Charles Neidt, Alf Danforth, and Oliver James.

J. E. Hamilton, 76-year-old well known real estate dealer of Winterset, died Saturday night in the local hospital of injuries received in a fall at his home the previous day.

Mr. Hamilton had arisen early Friday morning and was descending the stairs when he tripped, falling to the bottom of the staircase. He suffered a crushed vertebrae and a severed spinal chord.

Joe, as he was familiarly known, had been a resident of this county all his life, with the exception of one year. He was engaged in real estate and banking business with his brother, Dell, since 1902; this Association continuing until the death of the brother in May of this year.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at two o’clock in the Anderson funeral home. Rev. A. P. Keast of Des Moines, conducted the service. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery. Pallbearers were Alfred Danforth, Charles Neidt, Oliver James, Frank Willcox, Welba Farlow and Fred Ruth.

He is survived by his wife, and two sons, Clair E. Hamilton of Iowa City and Frank Hamilton of Malvern. Also surviving are six grandchildren.

Joseph Ernest Hamilton, the last surviving of a family of 11 children of Joseph C. W. Hamilton and Mary Draper Hamilton, was born in Walnut township, Madison county, Iowa, on Oct. 14, 1864.

As a boy he attended the country schools and studied at home in order to prepare himself for a teaching position, following in the footsteps of his father who had spent his life teaching. He began teaching as a young man and continued for several years after he was married, doing his farming in early morning and late evening in order to better support his family.

On Oct. 14, 1888, he was married to Catherine Dick, and to this union were born three sons, Clair, Frank and Ernest. Ernest, the elder son, preceded him in death in 1931.

In 1902 Mr. Hamilton left the farm and after spending one year in Colorado, settled in Winterset where he engaged in real estate and banking business. He was an energetic and busy man. He loved the “out-of-doors” and of all places he loved Madison county most. It could be said of him “This is my home, my native land”. As a young man he joined the Methodist church, the only organization to which he ever belonged.
