Earlham, Iowa

Marietta Martin, daughter of Daniel S. and Mary DeVault Martin, was born in Madison county, Iowa, on the seventeenth of April, 1872 and passed away at her daughter’s home in Earlham, on the morning of April 21st, 1941 at the age of 69 years and four days.

She was one of a family of eight children, all of whom have preceded her in death, with the exception of one sister. Her early life was spent in the home of her parents at Winterset. When but a girl she gave her heart to God and her life into His keeping. She united with the First Christian Church in Winterset in which se was a willing worker as long as that organization existed. When the church closed she did not transfer her membership.

On November 19, 1893 she was united in marriage to Elmer I. A. Gordon. To this union three daughters were born all of whom survive her. Since her marriage she has lived on farms in Madison county, having lived at their present location for forty-seven years.

She was a faithful, industrious and loving wife and mother, thinking of others rather than of self—always willing to help bear the load.

She bore her long illness with patience and fortitude, and although the nature of her malady was such that she suffered intense agony, she was resigned to the will of God and only last week said, “Everything is in the hands of God—He knows best and I am ready whenever he sees fit to call me home, and I hope it will be soon.”

She leaves to mourn her passing her husband, three daughters-Mrs. Grace Allen of Indianapolis, Indiana; Mrs. Daisy Miller of Adel, Iowa; and Mrs. Mabel Conrad of Earlham; one sister—Mrs. Lilian Lull of Holyoke, Minnesota; ten grandchildren, one of whom preceded her in death, and one great grandchild and many nieces and nephews, along with many other relatives, neighbors and friends who will miss her kindly presence and welcoming smile.
