WINTERSET VETERAN DIES IN CALIFORNIA

Thomas P. Rowe, Company A Soldier Succumbs at Age of 49

Thomas P. Rowe, one of Winterset's World War veterans and formerly widely known in this community, died in a hospital in California on Wednesday of last week. He was 49 years of age.

Mr. Rowe was born in Winterset, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Phil Rowe, and his entire life was spent here with the exception of the last 10 years. He served as a sergeant in Winterset's Company A 168th Infantry regiment. He was with the company during the Mexican border campaign in 1916, and during the World War he served with distinction in that company during most of the major battles of the Western front.

A few years after the war he was married here to Miss Mercedes Cochran. They lived at Cumming and later in Des Moines, before moving to California. They were later divorced and he married a second time in California. He was serving as a captain in the California State guard at the time of his death.

He is survived by his wife and three daughters, Roberta, Barbara and Patsy. His two sons, Robert and Phillip, died in infancy. He also leaves three sisters, Mrs. James Van Arsdal and Mrs. Roy Baird of Los Angeles, and Mrs. Will Henry of Davenport; and two brothers, Bruce Rowe of Indianola and Corp. Joe W. Rowe of the American 8th Army air force, now stationed in England.

Funeral services with full military honors were held last Saturday, and burial was made in West Los Angeles, Calif.
