ANDREW FOGLE OF WINTERSET PASSES

Widely Known Musician Dies Following Operation in Des Moines

Andrew Fogle, widely-known Winterset bandmaster and one of the most respected citizens of this community for many years, died at the Lutheran hospital in Des Moines last Saturday following an operation for a ruptured gall bladder. He had been ill for about two weeks. (d. 11-13-1943)

Mr. Fogle was 62 years of age at the time of his death. He was a native of Bohemia, where he was born at Pecin on May 10, 1881, the son of Frank and Barbara Fogle. He came to America in 1891 with his mother and joined his father and brother, Frank, at Yale, Iowa. Later the family moved to Diagonal where he engaged in farm work as a young man, later entering business for himself. He began his music career by starting a band in Diagonal and other nearby communities and from then on made music his profession. He studied at conservatories in Kansas City and Chicago.

He was married Jan. 10, 1910 to Ella J. Jarvis. They made their home in Diagonal until 1918, when they moved to Winterset where they had since made their home.

Here he organized and directed the Winterset band, which was an integral part of this community's life for a quarter century. For 11 years he taught music in the St. Charles and Urbandale schools and had also taught at New Virginia, St. Mary's and Martensdale.

He had united with the Winterset Presbyterian church in 1925, where he was a member of the choir. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias and the Modern Woodmen.

He is survived by his wife; his aged mother; and by nine brothers and sisters, Frank, Anna, Marie, Bessie, Rudolph, Jerry, Lottie, George and Hattie.

Funeral services were held Monday from the Winterset Presbyterian church, in charge of the pastor, the Rev. Arthur Mortenson. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery
