JAMES F. BROWN DIED AT CRESTON

Former Earlham Resident Headed FSA in South Half of Iowa

James F. Brown, a native of near Earlham, and a ranking member of the Farm Security Administration in Iowa, died suddenly at his home in Creston on July 10. He was 44 years of age.

He had been with the FSA since 1934. At the time of his death, he was FSA supervisor for the southern district of Iowa. Before moving his headquarters to Creston, he was in charge of the FSA office in Winterset.

Mr. Brown was born near Earlham on Jan. 23, 1899. He graduated from the Earlham high school and Iowa State college at Ames. He was married on July 12, 1926, to Miss Bertha Wheeler of Winfield. They were the parents of three children.

He was a life-long member of the First Presbyterian church of Earlham.

He leaves his wife; the three children, James, Nancy and Jane; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Milo Brown of Earlham; and two sisters, Mrs. Pauline Hardin of Paul, Mont., and Mrs. Louise McQuillen of Grosse Point Farms, Mich.

Funeral services were held Monday of last week from the Presbyterian church at Earlham. Burial was made in the Earlham cemetery.

James F. Brown Dies Suddenly

The community was greatly shocked and saddened upon learning of the sudden death of James F. Brown at his home at Creston, last Saturday morning. He became gravely ill about five o’clock in the morning and passed away about an hour later. A stroke was attributed as the cause.

OBITUARY

James Frances Brown was born near Earlham on January 23rd, 1899. He graduated from the Earlham high school in 1916. In 1918 he enrolled in the College of Agriculture at Iowa State College and received the degree of Bachelor of Science in 1923.

While in college, he became affiliated with Alpha Zeta, honorary agricultural fraternity and Phi Kappa Phi, honorary scholastic fraternity. He was also a member of Theta Chi, a social fraternity, and president of both the Agricultural Club and Alpha Zeta.

After graduation he taught school at Traer, Iowa, and was superintendent of schools in Olds and Oxford, Iowa.

He was married to Miss Bertha A. Wheeler of Winfield, Iowa, on July 12, 1926.

In 1934 he joined the Farm Security Administration, and at the time of his death, was District Supervisor of the Southern half of Iowa.

He was a life long member of the First Presbyterian church of Earlham, and taught Sunday School there for many years.

He died suddenly at his home in Creston, Iowa, on July 10th, 1943, at the age of 44.

Surviving him are his wife, three children, James, Nancy and Jane, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Milo E. Brown, and two sisters, Mrs. Donald B. Hardin of Paul, Idaho, and Mrs. Joseph V. McQuillen of Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan.

Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon, July 12 in the First Presbyterian church by the pastor Rev. S. R. Overholser. The body was laid to rest in the Earlham cemetery.
