Daughter of Pioneer Settlers in Madison County Was 68 Years Old
Mrs. Adelaide Madden, former Madison county and Winterset resident, died in Long Beach, Calif., Thursday, Feb. 3rd after an extended illness. She was 68 years of age and had lived in California for the past three years.
Mrs. Madden was the former Adelaide Schoenenberger, daughter of John and Lavina Schoenenberger, pioneer settlers of Madison county. She was born here Dec. 26, 1875. She was graduated from the Winterset high school with the class of 1895, and three years later she was married to Emory Nicholson, a Winterset attorney. They were the parents of a daughter, Mary.
Mr. Nicholson died in 1917 and for awhile his widow and her daughter made their home in Des Moines. Later they returned to Winterset. In 1928 she was married to H. C. Madden of Omaha. They resided in Omaha and Russelville, Ark. After Mr. Madden's death she moved to California where she had since resided. Mrs. Madden has been seriously ill for the past two months, and her daughter, Mrs. Matteson has been in Long Beach with her.
Mrs. Madden is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Merritt Matteson and two grandchildren, Barbara and John Matteson of LaCrosse, Wisc. She also leaves three brothers, Walter, Guy and Ivor Schoenenberger of Winterset. Her parents and a brother Ralph Schoenenberger have preceded her in death.
Funeral services were held at the Mortell Mortuary in Long Beach, Saturday and burial will be made at a later date in Winterset.
Coordinator note: Polk County marriage records show a second marriage to J.W. Baxter on March 24, 1917.
