Long-Time Resident Died on Sept. 17 at Age of 88 Years
Mrs. Thomas Kirkland, long-time resident of the Macksburg community, died at her home there Sept. 17, at the age of 88 years.
Mrs. Kirkland was the former Mahala Shaw, daughter of Anderson and Rachel Shaw, and was born in Brown county, Ohio, June 16, 1856. As a young woman she came with her parents to Madison county, which had since been her home.
She was married to Thomas Kirkland on Jan. 18, 1877. They were the parents of seven children; Will Kirkland of Macksburg, Mrs. Lillie Hamblin of Macksburg, Mrs. Anna Lee of Pueblo, Colo., Gale Kirkland of Winterset and three sons who preceded the mother in death, George, Emory and Charles.
In early life she had united with the Methodist church, and had been a member at Macksburg for more than 40 years. She was also affiliated with the W. R. C. and the Rebekah lodge of which she was the first member initiated at Macksburg.
In addition to her four children, she is survived by 16 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sept. 19 from the Macksburg Methodist church, in charge of the pastor, the Rev. J. A. England. Burial was made in the Moon cemetery.
