Early Settler in Walnut Township Passed on Sunday
William Austin Harwood, well known reisdent of Madison county, died at his home near Peru Sunday, Dec. 21st. Mr. Harwood who was 81 years of age, had been in failing health for several years, but only became seriously ill ten days ago. A stroke caused his death.
Mr. Harwood, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Harwood, was born in Illinois, January 13, 1860. He came to this county with his parents when he was eight years of age, and he has since made his home on the farm two miles west of Peru.
He is survived by his brother, J. L. Harwood, with whom he resided, and three nieces, who live in Neraska.
Funeral services for Mr. Harwood will be held in the church at Peru Friday morning at 11 a.m. and burial will be made in the Peru cemetery.

William Austin Harwood was born in Franklin county, Illinois, on January 13, 1860, a son of Joseph and Mary King Harwood. He came to Iowa with his parents, first residing in Clinton county, then Cedar county and came to Madison county in1868, where he stayed until 26 years of age. At that time he went to Julesburg, Colo., where he spent three years.
He then returned to Iowa and lived in Peru for seven years. He spent the rest of his active life engaged in farming and lived with his brother, J. L. Harwood and family on a farm 2 ½ miles west of Peru. He was never married.
He died at his home on Dec. 21, 1941 at the age of 81 years, 11 months, 8 days and is survived by one brother, Leland, and family.
