LIBERATOR CRASHES IN FORCED LANDING

Funeral Services Held Here Monday For Winterset Flyer

The sacrifice of another of the sons in the defense of the nation was visited upon Madison county on Tuesday of last week when 2nd Lieut. George D. Clark of the army air force, one of Winterset's most popular young men, died when his plane crashed in Texas.

Lieutenant Clark was the son of Iver W. Clark of Winterset and Mrs. Agnes Donahue Clark of Long Beach, Calif.

The young flyer was a co-pilot on a Liberator bomber. The plane was on a routine training flight from its home at Pyote, Texas. Last word received from the plane was a message saying they were running out of gasoline. It was apparently forced into an emergency landing that resulted in the crash. Seven of the crew were killed and the other five were seriously injured.

Lieutenant Clark was born Feb. 27, 1921 in Alexandria, Minn. When he was two years old he came with his parents to live near Winterset. He attended the schools here and graduated from the Winterset high school with the class of 1938.

He attended the State University of Iowa at Iowa City for two years, and then joined the U. S. army as an aviation cadet. He received his wings and commission as a 2nd lieutenant in July 1943.

He was married on May 22, 1943 to Miss Rosemary Lawhorn of Iowa City.

In addition to his wife, he leaves his father and mother, a half-sister, Mrs. Paul O'Neal of Winterset and a brother, Wallace Clark of Long Beach, Calif.
